What is a Bees Knees Cocktail?
This classic and iconic cocktail was created in 1921, more than 100 years ago at the Ritz Carlton hotel in Paris, the one who invented this easy cocktail was Frank Meier who was the head bartender, it is worth mentioning that Gin in those years was a hit!
The original recipe is composed of Gin giving some light herbal flavors, fresh Lemon juice, and Honey resulting in a balanced cocktail in flavors and aromas, however, one of its most accepted variations is adding orange juice giving the cocktail brightness color and citrus essences, and flavors!

Variation of a Bees Knees Cocktail
There are many ways to make variations, here I leave you some of them!
Vodka – You will eliminate the botanical and herbal flavors by opting for vodka! My recommendation is a citrus-flavored vodka.
Blood Orange – If you want to give your cocktail another color without removing that citrus flavor that goes very well with honey, use fresh blood orange juice instead of orange juice.
Ginger beer – Add about 1 oz and only put 2 oz of orange juice in it, the ginger beer will provide that spicy flavor together with the citrus of the juices it will be a delight to your palate!
When to serve a Bees Knees Cocktail?
The Orange Bees Knees, that’s great just anytime you need a cocktail!
Try it as a:
- Cocktail Hour Drink
- Pool party
- Before Dinner
- Girl’s or guy’s night drink
- After Dinner
- Game night
Use a medium-budget Gin because if you use a very cheap one, the quality of the cocktail will be reflected in a very alcoholic flavor instead of botanical and floral!
