The legendary Cosmopolitan is a simple cocktail with a big history. The Cosmo was a product of its time. In the late-1980s and early-’90s, vodka was king, but flavored vodka was just finding an audience. This is a ladies night cocktail made with vodka, a orange liqueur, lime juice and cranberry juice.
It reached its height of popularity in the 1990s, when the HBO show “Sex and the City” was at its peak. For a good decade, the Cosmopolitan may have been the most popular cocktail in America, and bartenders couldn’t work a shift without making dozens of them for thirsty patrons.
Cosmopolitan Cocktail Ingredients
- Premium Vodka: no premium vodka required just make sure you have a high-quality vodka. Read some recommendations below.
- Orange Liqueur: Just as there are premium vodkas, there is also high-quality orange liqueur, this provides the citrus touch, Read some recommendations below.
- Lemon Juice: speaking of cocktails, fresh lemon and lime juice is essential for the flavor.
- Cranberry Juice: cranberry juice is actually quite tart. So if you want add some dash of agave syrup will keep the acid taste balanced.
What Vodka to Use
we suggest using a top shelf vodka for this Cosmopolitan drink. The best quality vodka for the price is Grey Goose, Ketel One and Belvedere. That being said, there is a rumor that Costco’s Kirkland brand vodka is actually a high end vodka that has been sold to the whole store for a lower price point.
Orange Liqueur
For our cocktails, I always spring for a bottle of Grand Marnier. The taste and quality cannot be beat. It is at the higher end of both quality and alcohol content. As we mentioned, it is what I use in our margaritas. Other label for a orange liqueur that I recommend is Cointreau but you can use as well any triple sec.
